What is MDT?
Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) is an active treatment approach that differs from many of the other musculoskeletal therapeutic approach. When you are in pain, there are certain positions and movements that make your pain worse. There are also certain positions and movements where you feel less pain. This is part of the mechanical presentation of your problem and serves as information that you therapist uses in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. This information, combined with a thorough mechanical evaluation can allow a trained therapist to help you understand the different factors influencing your pain, and teach you simple exercises that can reduce and even abolish your pain.
We can often get rapid results, even if the pain is chronic or hasn't responded to previous therapies (heat, electrical stimulation, passive mobilisations). The average length of treatment is 3-5 sessions and the goal is to teach you to take control of your pain.

The Fundamental Principles
- Active patient involvement
- Patient education
- Simple individualised exercises
Assessment
Our therapists will start by having you explain your problem to them, including the effect of the pain on your daily life and the effect of your daily life on your pain. Afterwards, a movement exam will be performed to help your therapist specifically classify your problem.
Treatment
The assessment will allow your therapist to determine the individualised treatment program that is right for you. This will entail detailed education regarding the factors that are irritating your condition and the movements and postures that will help to alleviate your symptoms. Your therapist will progressively add in additional techniques when appropriate.
By focusing on mobilisations/movements that you can do yourself, you will be able to continue progressing between therapy sessions and potentially progress much faster than if movements/mobilisations were only performed in the clinic. Because these exercises are usually very simple, you can usually do them almost anywhere and generally no equipment is required.
